AbstractSouthern Ocean is characterized by strong interaction with the atmosphere due to strong winds, cooling of surface water and sea ice seasonal variability. These intense winds generate the fiercest ocean waves on the planet, which are poorly studied due to the lack of in situ records. Based on data collected by wave buoys in the Bransfield Strait in the Southern Ocean during the 2020 and 2021 summers (austral summers), the objectives of work are to characterize the wave and wind field recorded by the buoys; to evaluate Significant Wave Height (SWH) and wave direction the ERA5 and WAVERYS global reanalysis. To compare wave reanalysis and buoy records with a simulation of the wave WAVEWATCH-III (WW3) model for the summer of 2020. Statistical parameters such as Pearson Correlation and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) were calculated for SWH. Initially, some of the ice parameterizations in the WW3 wave model were tested to choose the one with the best performance. Also the WW3 simulation were evaluated with a satellites reanalysis for bias calculation. From the in situ data for the summer of 2020 were observed, a maximum SWH of 3.38m (NW), a minimum SWH of 0.19m and a mean SWH of 1.07m. Predominant wave direction was from the ESE followed by SE and E directions. The ESE and SE waves had a higher frequency of SWH less than 1.0m, followed by waves with SWH between 1-2m. For SE wave, the SWH frequency between 3-4m was higher. In the E direction, waves with SWH less than 1m and between 1-2m had similar frequency of occurrence. During the 2020 summer there were no wind records at the buoy. In 2021 summer, it was recorded a maximum SWH of 5.6m from SW, a minimum SWH of 0.43m for a mean observation of 1.16m. A maximum wind of 12.8ms-1 from SSW was recorded on a different date to the maximum SWH. Calm conditions were also recorded and the average wind speed was 6.15ms-1 for the entire period. The buoy recorded wind from all directions, predominating NW, NNW and W respectively, with high frequency of wind between 6-8ms-1 and 8-10ms-1. In the W direction, there was also the highest frequency of wind between 10-12ms-1 for the entire record. The fourth predominant direction was SW with high frequencies of winds between 6-8ms-1 and 8-10ms-1, it was the second direction with the highest frequency of winds between 10-12ms-1. The next predominant direction was SE, with high frequency of wind between 6-8ms-1, 8-10ms-1 and 4-6ms-1. A lower frequency was observed in winds between 10-12ms-1. This fifth predominant wind direction coincided with the predominant wave direction. The southerly component winds had magnitudes less than 4ms-1. The southerly component winds were the only directions with magnitudes lower than 4ms-1. The predominant wave directions were SE, SSE and S respectively, showing high frequency of waves between 0-1m and between 1-2m. There was a lower frequency of waves between 2-3m for the three directions. The waves arrival from the first four predominant wind directions was not observed at the buoy because it was located south of King George Island, situation that limits the waves spread. For the summer of 2020, a RMSE of 0.44 and a correlation of 0.77 were obtained for ERA5, while WAVERYS obtained a RMSE of 0.31 and a correlation of 0.82. On the other hand, in the summer of 2021, ERA5 obtained a RMSE of 0.56 and a correlation of 0.90 and WAVERYS a RMSE of 0.27 with a correlation of 0.89. It was concluded that WAVERYS was the reanalysis that best represented the wave field in the study area and period. A good similarity wasnt obtained in the wave direction analysis for ERA5 and WAVERYS compared to buoy records. Small bias values were obtained for SWH (satellites and WW3 model). The wave model showed areas with negative bias in places with low ice concentration such as east of the Weddell Sea. A good similarity was obtained in the wave direction analysis between the buoy and WW3 model. The dominant wave directions were well represented, as well as, the SWH range and their frequencies in each direction. Comparing the wave rose diagram (WW3 simulated and wave reanalysis) with the wave rose diagram from the buoy record, it was concluded that the simulated wave rose diagram by the WW3 model obtained the best result. WW3 simulation showed a RMSE of 0.34 and a correlation of 0.80.
