AbstractThe MODIS sensor, launched on board of the Terra and Aqua satellites, offers almost daily images with a spatial resolution up to 250m, representing a great opportunity in the monitoring of large agricultural areas. However, the influences of some MODIS products characteristics are still unknown for agricultural studies. Two hypotheses where addressed in the present work: 1) NDVI values from the MOD13Q1 product taken from homogeneous targets have higher variance when compared to NDVI values calculated from single day images. 2) The Linear Mixture Model (LMM), applied to MOD13Q1 images, can decrease the variances inherent to the different acquisition angles of the sensor. A comparison of the MOD09 and MOD13 images variances was performed in different dates and land use classes. In addition, the LMM was applied and the vegetation fraction image evaluated in comparison with the MOD13 NDVI image. The tests showed that samples of crop, forest and pasture had higher variances of NDVI in December for the MOD09images, and in August and January, the opposite happened. In the daily images (MOD09), crop areas showed low variance in August, increasing in December and decreasing in January. Although the MOD13 images follow the same pattern as the MOD09, the variances for the three months were lower than those of MOD09, rejecting the initial hypothesis of this work.
