ABSTRACT: This report presents data collection methodology and initial results description for the fieldwork carried out from September 06 th to 26 th, 2013, at terra firme (mainland) communities in the Sustainable Forest District BR-163, southwestern Pará. This work complements and partially reproduces field surveys conducted at riverine communities of the Tapajós and Arapiuns Rivers in 2009 and 2012, respectively. The study area presents different types of occupations and land use contexts, such as: protected areas, settlement projects, mining areas, family farms, livestock and grain production farms. Three regions were surveyed: from the municipality of Itaituba to Uruará, by the Transamazonia road; from Itaituba to Novo Progresso, by BR-163 and Transgarimpeira roads, and the municipalities of Santarém, Belterra and Mojuí dos Campos by local roads. We surveyed 55 communities by interviewing key informants, using semi-structured questionnaires that contained questions related to: sociodemographic characteristics, community infrastructure, health and education services, land cover and the use of forest resources. Local infrastructure was characterized by descriptions and photograph records. From remote sensing data, the limits and internal spatial organization of each community and cities were also mapped and checked in the field. Descriptions Points referred as urban class at TerraClass 2010 mapping were also verified in the field, resulting in slight class confusion, around 2\%, and some the inaccuracy of polygons borders. The results stressed differences between communities according to geographical context and its historical background. In general, remote communities, far from main roads and municipality centers, presented precarious infrastructure and services, and thus, they establish a strong dependence relationship with other settlements and cities. Searching for higher education level and jobs are factors that influence the population mobility, as well as infrastructure improvement activities such as reservoir constructions, roads paving (as in course for BR-163 road) and mining activities. Land use and land cover changes, e.g. mechanized grain production and the improvement of livestock production in the southern state, have effects on land tenure, communities economy and population mobility. Detailed analysis of these field results will be carried out in future and specific research activities. The findings will also be compared with the riverine communities characterizations, contributing to a better understanding of the relationships between communities and its connectivity to urban networks in the southwest of Pará. |
