AbstractThis paper presents the results of an object-oriented, hierarchical classification of macrophyte cover in the region of Monte Alegre lake, Pará, Brazil. The classification is based on a combined time series of Radarsat 1 and MODIS imagery, and provides a seasonal map of vegetation cover in the floodplain, as well as macrophyte cover maps for various dates along two consecutive hydrological cycles (2004 and 2005). The results show that macrophyte cover is inversely proportional to flooding levels, and that the occurrence of drought can lead to increased macrophyte cover during the early growth stages. These results are relevant when considering the fact that macrophytes are one of the largest sources of carbon input to the floodplain. Considering that an increase in the frequency and recurrence of drought has been predicted for region as a result of climatic change, this could therefore lead to an increase in the cycling and emission of carbon from Amazonian floodplain environments.
