forest monitoring
DETER. Software Development - Digital Image Processing - TerraLib - Remote Sensing
AbstractIn forest monitoring systems, using optical imagery, the interferences from clouds and their shadows during the rainy season, makes the constant monitoring very difficult. We proposed to use ALOS PALSAR FBD imagery provided by Kyoto and Carbon Initiative to detect recent deforestation in the Amazon, based on open source software in order to integrate this procedure at Brazilian Forest Monitoring System. A preliminary version of the SARClass was used over a test site in the state of Pará. The results showed that the procedure is feasible, it provides results comparable to official deforestation mapping, although it still requires corrections for final classification mapping. Reducing the influence of relieve, variability from meteorological factors, and including other land cover classes, SARClass would be a valuable tool to improve the forest monitoring, providing auxiliary deforestation mapping specially for intense cloud cover areas in the Brazilian Amazon.
