AbstractThis paper describes the SONDA project devised to improve our national capacity for the assessment of solar and wind energy resources and to help investors, stakeholders, and government at decision level, in the development of solar and wind energy projects. The SONDA network was designed to provide high quality environmental data from acquisition sites located in characteristic climatic regions of Brazil. This database is to be used in the development and for validation of models to estimate solar and wind energy resources as well as to study resources variability and climate impacts. The database from SONDA is freely available to public access and can be downloaded from www.cptec.inpe.br/sonda. Besides that, a simplified GIS tool has been implemented in the website to integrate field measurements, energy resources and geographical and socio-economic data to help users in comparing different scenarios for energy planning and for investment decisions.
